Advice For English Teachers In Japan

When a student informs you that her name is Yayoi, do not reply by saying 'Oh, like Yayoi Kusama'. It will probably be greeted with a look of utter bewilderment.

At least you didn't answer 'Oh, like the ancient Japanese civilization'--which I did once. It didn't go over well either.

Postscript: why is Yayoi Kusama so cool?

She certainly is that.

Miho and I attended an exhibition of hers at Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris about six or seven years ago. It was amazing, but I also remember the sight of young children running around whilst a filmed orgy was being played on a huge TV. I thought it was slightly inappropriate, but maybe that's just my typical British prudishness.
